This course will focus on the essential skills for ecologists to conduct bat surveys to a high standard, in line with current legislation and best practice guidelines. We will examine the laws protecting bats in the UK and Ireland. We will explore key aspects of bat ecology and important features for identifying bats, discuss various types of roosts, and how to look for signs of roosts. We will review the requirements and methods of bat surveys, how to prepare for them, select appropriate equipment, and compile all survey information into clear and concise reports.

Throughout the course, we will also examine effective communication with clients, a crucial role of an ecologist, to ensure a positive outcome for bats.

The training style will combine presentations, case studies, and scenarios with small group work.
