To enable the candidates to be aware of the procedures and legal requirements when
Signing and Guarding excavation works on the Highway.
Identify various types of signing and guarding
Monitor safety procedures
Assess the legal requirements
Supervisors who are responsible for their operatives in setting up safe road works, before and during excavation work.
Candidates will participate in theory lessons all of which are highlighted by the use of OHP & Videos covering ;
New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 – Chapter 8
Review of the codes of practice
Requirements of a site survey
Drawing up site plans
Notices required by Local Authorities
Safe systems of work
Code of Practice – safety at Street
Works and Road Works
An introduction to the use of vehicle actuated portable traffic signals, Monitoring of Practical – Signing, Lighting and Guarding

Scottish Qualifications Authority ( SQA ) Certificate – Unit 10 Monitoring Signing, Lighting and Guarding.
If the works do not involve breaking up the road or are works only of the type referred to in regulation 3(2), a trained operative has a prescribed qualification if he has achieved the
unit of competence set out as Unit 2.
It is therefore advisable that candidates who are completing Unit 10 should also complete
Unit 2 so that they have a qualification that ensures compliance with the law.
