Our introductory level one day course is the ideal first step for those wishing to use horses in farming, forestry or around the smallholding.
Enquire via email to The Ancient Trails Company.
You’ll be introduced to two types of harnesses – driving and working- for you to become familiarised with. After learning the names of the different parts, their functions and how to check them, you'll learn how to put them on a horse. There is plenty of time to ask questions and get used to using the correct terminology. You’ll then get to meet our ponies, prepping them with a brush down and foot check before harnessing them yourself. You'll then have the chance to drive the ponies, learning how to use long reins safely, the different commands and aids. At the end of the day, you'll be able to identify the correct harness for the kind of work you'd like to do, names the parts, understand their function, and correctly fit them on a horse. You'll leave with basic long reining skills, tips on training your horse to harness and suggestions for next steps in your learning - we only provide entry level learning and receive no commission or benefit of any kind from your onward training providers. All of our courses have limited attendees so you'll have plenty of time to ask questions specific to your requirements. We can also provide camping at an additional cost.
We are a small business in Dorset, England specialising in non-ridden equestrian activities. Our activity days and courses give introductory level skills to those wishing to find out more about harnessing for cart, farming or forestry, pack ponies & wild camping and pony ownership.
