myBearpaw Craft Classes – where you can learn new skills in a friendly, relaxed environment with an emphasis on fun and creativity.
This course is available on the myBearpaw website.
This class is for new quilters who have finished a patchwork top and completed their quilting but are now faced with the daunting prospect of binding it! More experienced quilters who struggle with binding may also find the class useful.
We’ll start by covering how to calculate how much binding you need, the differences between single fold and double fold binding, and how much fabric you need to make your length of binding. Well also include take away instruction sheets to help you do these calculations for your next quilt. Using demonstrations and sample pieces Catriona will show you how to cut your binding strips for double fold binding, how to join them and how to press them. We’ll make the binding for the quilt you want to bind but we’ll provide small quilted blocks and binding for you to practise sewing on binding and creating perfect mitred corners. We’ll also have quick discussions and demos of a few extra bits and pieces; how to use single fold binding, when to use bias binding, how to turn a corner that isn’t a right angle and how to face a quilt instead.
You should finish the class with your binding prepped and a full understanding of how to sew it on.
You should come along to the class with the height and width of the quilt you want to bind and the fabric you want to use to bind it.
You must be able to use a sewing machine for this class, being able to use a rotary cutter is also highly desirable but not absolutely essential.
myBearpaw is a craft class studio and specialist retailer which started inside Avery Homestore (one of Edinburgh’s best independent home and craft retailers for over fifteen years). In April 2014 it moved to new premises in Edinburgh where Jo Avery further developed her myBearpaw brand of sewing classes, fabric, wool and haberdashery. In July 2020 the business was taken over by Catriona Brown who aims to continue in the same creative vein, with interesting classes and lovely craft supplies.
