The Working Woods Scotland Course is run by ASHS (Association of Scottish hardwood Sawmillers), with support form Scottish Forestry and Scottish Forestry Trust. It’s aimed to provide insight on the practises around growing, managing and processing Scotland native broadleaves and hardwood timber and goes into the background of broadleaves and hardwoods as a valuable (but under-represented) part of the timber industry in Scotland. The course runs over 3 days and is based around the Scottish Wood sawmill, Dunfermline. The days are split between days in the woodland and days at the sawmill yard. In the woodland we cover much of the silviculture of broadleaves, with an angle on productive woodland management and how best to manage standing and felled timber to maintain its value and best market it to the timber industry. In the yard we go over how to grade and value round logs and sawn boards - mostly focusing on hardwoods but some premium softwoods too such as Larch and Douglas Fir. We’ll also cover timber processing practises such as drying, sawing and further processing. - Silviculture practises to manage broadleaves for timber production (and premium softwood, Larch and Douglas Fir) - Grading standing timber - Grading and valuing round logs (hardwoods and premium softwoods) - Sawing, timber processing; storing and drying best practises - Grading and valuing sawn boards (hardwoods and premium softwoods) - Finding a market for your timber From budding sawmillers, foresters, furniture-makers, or even landowners looking to make the most out of their broadleaves - we aim to bring in a diverse mix of participants in order to maximise cross-industry peer learning and networking. The course is run twice per year, for available dates please see the ASHS website at www.ashs.co.uk. Course costs are £650 per attendee.
The Association of Scottish Hardwood Sawmillers is a co-operative of small and medium Scottish timber businesses. ASHS are committed to improving the industry for Scotland's native hardwood and premium softwood species. We work toward this objective through our representation and support of small Scottish timber businesses, and our development of training to improve awareness and education in the management of broadleaves and production of hardwood timber.

The Women in Forestry Practical Training Fund, was established by Scottish Forestry to support the personal development of women, providing them with additional skills to progress their careers and employment opportunities in forestry beyond their current role. With the support of Future Woodlands Scotland we are delighted to be able to reopen for applications.
