myBearpaw Craft Classes – where you can learn new skills in a friendly, relaxed environment with an emphasis on fun and creativity.
This course is available on the myBearpaw website.
2 Mornings – 18/5/25 and 22/6/25 10:30am – 1pm
This class encompasses two complementary techniques over two afternoon sessions. On the first afternoon we’ll look at cutting our fabric into strips and backing squares and start working out our fabric layout. You can choose to cut the fabric in advance or wait until after the first class if you want some more advice on it. We’ll then learn how to stitch a log cabin directly onto our wadding and backing fabric and prepare the resulting block to be joined. You’ll have 5 weeks of homework time to get all the blocks needed for your chosen quilt size completed, (or at least enough for 2 rows!). In the second class we’ll trim our blocks and learn how to join them together using my favourite quilt as you go method. I’ve designed the block to be 14” finished and you can make any size of quilt you like. We’ll provide fabric quantity guidance per block and for 3 different sizes of quilt, 28”x42”, 56”x56” and 84”x84”.
This is an interesting and different technique that makes a relatively quick quilt and removes the stress of layering and quilting. Bring your sewing machine, fabric (exact amounts will be sent with your order confirmation), wadding and basic sewing kit. Sewing machines are available on request.
This is a great class for quilters of all levels but you should be familiar with using a rotary cutter, ruler and mat to cut fabric as well as being able to use a sewing machine.
myBearpaw is a craft class studio and specialist retailer which started inside Avery Homestore (one of Edinburgh’s best independent home and craft retailers for over fifteen years). In April 2014 it moved to new premises in Edinburgh where Jo Avery further developed her myBearpaw brand of sewing classes, fabric, wool and haberdashery. In July 2020 the business was taken over by Catriona Brown who aims to continue in the same creative vein, with interesting classes and lovely craft supplies.
