Immersion Hypothermia Short Course. 4 Hours. A specialist course for those with an interest or requirement to more thoroughly understand Immersion Hypothermia.
This course is available on the First Aid Training Cooperative website.
The 4 hour Immersion Hypothermia course is run by our senior trainer and clinical advisor Steve Welsh. Steve is the Clinical Training Manager for the Scottish Ambulance Service Special Ops Response Team as well as being a swift water rescue trainer for the emergency services, so he knows a thing or two about helping people who are cold and wet!
This is a unique course that is aimed at those who have already completed a 2 day outdoor first aid course. Theory will be given into cold water shock, hypothermia signals and immersion hypothermia and its emergency management.
All able participants are then expected to take part in outdoor immersion hypothermia simulation exercises (bring a towel and change of clothes!). Course participants will be immersed in cold open water at the venue (may be a loch, reservoir or similar) for differing lengths of time, without wetsuits. This will simulate the various stages of cold affecting the body.
During each of these scenarios, the group will work together with Robert to assist the 'casualties' out of the water and to rewarm them properly, using a range of emergency equipment in fully supported and supervised exercises. This will also include methods of calling the emergency services.
Who is this course for -
Please note, when running one of these courses as a private course at your club, it will be a 6 hour course and include a Basic Life Support session at the start.
