The Modern Apprenticeship in Mixed Farming is a work based award and requires attendance at Borders College over a 2 year period. Assessments for this award are also work based. Candidates will attend classes and a tutor and a training consultant will support them throughout the delivery of this Modern Apprenticeship.
The course comprises of 3 mandatory units and 11 optional units. The units cover the following areas: Promote, Monitor and Maintain Health, Safety and Security, Communicate in a Business Environment, Maintain and Store Records within the Workplace.11 optional units can be chosen from a range of options suited to the work place. To achieve the Modern Apprenticeship candidates must also achieve 5 core skills at SCQF Level 5 in Communication, Working with Others, Problem Solving, ICT & Numeracy and a short course in Emergency First Aid approved by the HSE. The candidate also has to pass two further accredited, legislatively and nationally recognised short courses at a suitable level. E.g. Safe Use of Pesticides (PA1) or All-Terrain Vehicle Handling
At your workplace and at our Newtown Borders College Campus your tutor and training consultant will guide you every step of the way, providing personalised tutoring and support.
Candidates must be employed and working in a suitable environment to be able to provide evidence of their competence in the workplace.

The Women in Agriculture Practical Training Fund has been established by Scottish Government to support the personal development of women, providing them with additional skills to progress their careers and employment opportunities in Scottish agriculture beyond their current role.
The Next Generation Practical Training Fund has been established by Scottish Government with an aim to support those relatively new to agriculture, by providing the opportunity for skills development and training on the practicalities of agricultural practice as well as wider business and sustainability skills, in order to help them secure, sustain and progress their careers.
