Description

DOMESTIC CHAINSAW MAINTENANCE & CROSS CUTTING

Aimed at the non-professional Chainsaw user to understand how to maintain and use a chainsaw to cross-cut fire wood at home safely.

Candidates may use their own saw, or borrow one of ours. Candidates must provide their own PPE (See Kit Requirements)


This course does not cover tree felling and is not suitable for the work place.

Course Content

Introduction
  • Instructor welcome & introduction, coffee
  • House rules & safety procedures, Welfare
  • Candidate introduction and brief experience
Health and safety
  • Risk assessment – Understanding the risks and how to control them.
  • PPE & equipment 
  • Saw Safety features
  • Chain info and how to buy a new chain
  • Fuel mix and why, chain oil

Coffee break (15 mins)

Maintenance
  • Tool selection
  • Chain sharpening and Guide bar Maintenance.
  • Cleaning – air filter, side casing cooling fins
  • Chain tension
Lunch break (30 mins)

Starting the saw
  • Pre start checks
  • Fueling 
  • Cold and warm starts & operation checks
Cross cutting
  • Positioning ready for work/stabilizing timber
  • Straight through cuts
  • Tension and compression
  • Boring cuts
  • Cutting over guide bar sized timber.
  • Procedure for safely removing trapped saw.
Task completion
  • Return and storage of tools
  • Debrief
  • Dispersal
