This introductory 2-day course, is ideal for those looking to get involved in peatland restoration work. The course combines classroom sessions with a site visit to a nearby peatland where restoration work is currently underway. Topics covered indoors and onsite include: The formation, functioning, and importance of peatlands Restoration techniques for repairing degraded peatlands, focusing on drain blocking, drain reprofiling, gully blocking, and hag reprofiling (observed onsite) Access considerations, including protection of watercourses Protected species and licensing Spatial data capture Peatland ACTION funding and processes, including project management, liaison, and reporting The IUCN Peatland Code The influence of habitat and environmental conditions on restoration outcomes Monitoring the effectiveness of restoration efforts Health and Safety and managing CDM requirements on a peatland site Please note, although the location is set to Thurso, various locations for study are available.
UHI North, West & Hebrides – Bridging Businesses and Skills Development UHI North, West & Hebrides supports learners across 19 campuses, providing flexible, high-quality training to meet regional workforce needs. The college addresses skills priorities across sectors such as net zero, renewable energy, engineering, advanced manufacturing, space, land–sea industries, Gaelic, and peatland restoration. Through the Peatland Training Fund, it helps individuals develop the skills required to protect and restore Scotland’s peatlands. Local businesses and learners can access short courses, Modern Apprenticeships, and bespoke workplace training via the Skills Hub. Funding-eligible courses are clearly marked with badges, ensuring training is accessible and aligned with local skills needs.
The Peatland Training Fund, was established by NatureScot Peatland ACTION to support those already working in peatland restoration or keen to start, by providing the opportunity to develop their skills and to grow and develop in the sector.
