Darroch Nurseries specialises in growing native, local provenance Scottish trees. Our hands-on "How to Grow Native Scottish Trees" course is offered one day per month over a full year, providing the opportunity to learn and understand what is involved in the full cycle of growing native Scottish trees, from tree seed collecting to sowing, growing, and selling. The course also touches upon the administrative, legal and regulatory requirements involved in running a native tree nursery in Scotland. The course is a blend of hands-on, in-person learning, taking place largely at Darroch Nurseries or the surrounding area (e.g. woodlands). There are opportunities to deliver some training days at other Scottish small nurseries. There will also be some online support. Darroch Nurseries is located in the Central Belt, 10 minutes drive west of Linlithgow. The course runs over one day per month for 12 months, starting in early 2025. The course is delivered principally by Darroch Nurseries staff, with visiting growers from other Scottish nurseries. The course requires a reasonable degree of fitness and willingness to work outdoors and in woodlands, with weather-appropriate clothing and footwear. Prior knowledge of growing (trees, vegetables, etc) and a basic understanding of Scotland's environment is preferable but not required. Own transportation is preferred as there are no public transportation options to the nursery.
Darroch Nurseries is a social enterprise dedicated to growing native, local provenance trees in and for Scotland. We care deeply about nurturing the relationship between people, the land, and the health & wellbeing of both. In addition to growing trees, we operate a Living Classroom where we teach how to grow native trees.

The Women in Forestry Practical Training Fund was established by Scottish Forestry to support the personal development of women, providing them with additional skills to progress their careers and employment opportunities in forestry beyond their current role.
